Green Man Conservation Woodland Management

Most woodland across Europe has fallen out of management since oil, gas and coal took over as our main source of fuel. However throughout human history there has always been a ‘Wood Age’, and our reliance on woodland will only increase in years to come as peak oil and unstable supplies force alternative technology and use of our local fuels

Decreasing woodland management has led to a loss of skills and ways of life with them, but also since management of our native woodlands began (with the arrival of Norman settlers) our wildlife has adapted to human methods and now relies upon it, for example Fritillary butterflies have become associated and reliant on man-made coppice systems

Green Man Conservation work with woodland owners who consider themselves stewards of their woodlands, who take pride in regenerating and enhancing the woodland, and ensuring its future and protection. We are proud to care for our native woodlands and continue practicing sustainable woodland management in these valuable eco-systems

Woodland Management work undertaken by Green Man Conservation:

  • Coppicing, including re-coppicing of overstood woodland

  • Deadwood clearance and making safe woodland areas. (Deadwood is retained onsite as a vital habitat, and safe standing deadwood is left)

  • Re-stocking woodlands to ensure a continued habitat and crop

  • Felling, control and clearance of dominant non-native invasive species

  • Timber extraction and processing

  • Reversion of coniferous woodlands to deciduous

  • Clearance and maintenance of woodland rides and glades

  • Fencing and predator control methods

We offer no obligation quotations and site specific planting plans. Contact us to arrange a visit.

This overstood Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) coppice has remained uncut since the first World War. The challenge of bringing this woodland back into rotation requires sensitivity. All our equipment has a low impact on the woodland floor to minimise damage to roots or the disturbance of seedbanks dormant in the soil. Here, the canopy is chipped to later be used as a weed suppressant around new planting. Green Man Land Management & Habitat Creation

Our work comprises Land Management and Habitat Creation where we can advise on a wider range of subjects, and link those within the requirements of a specific site.

Where the aim is to increase diversity; the more habitats a site can provide the greater the range of wildlife, from a tiny garden to a 1000 acre farm site, if habitat is there, nature will find it.

Inclusion of water to a site through lakes, ponds and ditches and inoculation of these with native plants; habitat piles and provision of boxes and shelters for insects, birds and bats; open dry spaces for butterflies and bees, grasslands and meadow, dense and open canopy cover; there are myriad possibilities to hugely increase the value of a site, and the return for all users.

An old coppice stool springs into life after being protected from grazing deer and rabbits just in time. Green Man Conservation habitat management Light allowed to penetrate the woodland floor for the first time in decades will allow seeds dormant in the soil to sprout. New planting will complete the re-coppicing and suppress dominant weeds. Green Man Woodland Management A doormouse box on an ancient coppice ash amidst the bluebells. Our native woodland habitats are truly magical. Green Man Conservation are proud to be stewards of British Woodlands
